Snapchat Dysmorphia
Identity
Snapchat Dysmorphia is an audiovisual collaboration between Joeri Woudstra and Joep Truijen. The work was commissioned by Duran Lantink in 2019. Similar to Duran Lantink's pieces, which combine high-end backstock pieces donated by haute couture fashion warehouses into new upcycled garments, the characters in Woudstra & Truijen's video piece are a collage of a broad range of physical features, skin colors, and bodily shapes.
The work proposes an alternative to a singular future of (physical) monoculture and the loss of physical features resulting from infinite crossbreeding. It does so by creating new collaged shapeshifting bodies that emphasize the distinctive features of different skin types, body types, and genders in all their original beauty. Within each of the five physical compositions of the body, the two artists experiment with various ways different body parts and limbs can create new shapes of beauty. This is achieved by combining the bodily features and physical aesthetics of cultures worldwide, presented in a place devoid of visual input
